Being an instructional Designer for over 15 years, I myself have felt that not only ID is a vast field but it is an ever-evolving field.

Starting today, we will start to explore the field of ID in a series of articles that I am going to write for you. I can assist you with all the difficulties that you face while doing the ID for your organization. Today’s topic includes: What is Instructional Designing.

Let’s identify some of the definitions of ID, first:

·  Instructional design is the science of creating detailed specifications for the development, implementation, evaluation, and maintenance of situations that facilitate the learning of both large and small units of subject matter at all levels of complexity.

·         Instructional Design is the systematic development of instructional specifications using learning and instructional theory to ensure the quality of instruction. It is the entire process of analysis of learning needs and goals and the development of a delivery system to meet those needs. It includes development of instructional materials and activities; and tryout and evaluation of all instruction and learner activities.

·         Instructional design is incorporation of various elements of design in a logical manner so that they ensure effective learning. A design created for instruction can be effective only if: all the components of design are complete and there are no unnecessary components and there is relationship among all the components.

·     Thus, we come to the conclusion that Instructional designing is a systematic implementation of concepts, theories, and models which ensure that knowledge, skills, and expertise is transformed to or developed in the target audiences in the most effective manner.

Why Instructional Design?

Ø  It is characterized by an orderly process for gathering and analyzing collective and individual performance requirements, and by the ability to respond to identified training needs.

Ø  The application of a systems approach to training ensures that training programs and the required support materials are continually developed in an effective and efficient manner to match the variety of needs in an ever rapidly changing environment.

Ø  ISD is often called SAT (System Approach to Training) or ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implement, Evaluate).
